Can You Negotiate with PODS? How Movers Actually Pay Less
The short answer: yes — the price PODS shows you online is a starting price, not the final one. Two approaches have worked for real customers. First, call and ask about promotions before you book: one mover knocked $50 a month off multi-month storage simply by asking on the phone (2020). Second, book online first and then call to cancel: one mover watched more than $1,000 come off the original quote after that single call (2024). In both cases, mentioning a competitor's quote strengthens your hand.
Call and ask before you book
The website shows you the standard price. Phone reps can apply promotions the website never displays — but only if you ask. "Are there any promotions or discounts you can apply to this?" is the entire script.
It works best on multi-month storage, because that's recurring revenue PODS wants to lock in. In 2020, a mover booking PODS for a California-to-Kansas move with 3–6 months of storage asked that exact question on the phone and got $50 a month off storage. The first bill came to about $485: $166 for delivery, $50 for insurance, and roughly $205 for the first month of storage with the discount already baked in.
Ask about every category, not just a general discount: AAA, military, and student discounts exist but aren't always advertised. If the rep says there's nothing available, ask whether any seasonal promotion is coming — then call back.
Book first, then call to cancel
This is the stronger move. Book the dates you actually want online (PODS allows free cancellation within its cancellation window, so you're not trapped), then call and say you're thinking of cancelling because a competitor came in lower.
In 2024, a mover did exactly this: booked PODS, called to cancel, and the retention offer that followed took more than $1,000 off the original quote. The cancellation desk has save offers the regular sales desk doesn't — keeping your booking is worth a discount to them.
How to play it: have a real competing number ready (even a 1-800-PACK-RAT or U-Pack quote works as leverage), state the budget number you'd accept, and hold firm through the first "let me see what I can do." The first offer is rarely the best one. Only do this if you'd genuinely walk away — the tactic stops working if you fold immediately.
Published discounts worth stacking
Before either tactic, check what's already public: PODS runs seasonal promotions (often 10% off delivery or first month's rental), and various referral programs advertise discounts on transportation. Stack these with a phone ask — the rep applies the promotion first, then looks for anything extra.
Timing matters too. Moving between September and May (off-peak) gets you lower base rates than June and July, which also gives the phone rep more room to move.
What you can't negotiate
Delivery and pickup fees are the stickiest line items — reps have the least flexibility there. And in peak season, when trucks and containers are fully booked, nobody needs your business badly enough to discount it. If you're moving in June or July, put your effort into the published promotions instead of haggling.
U-Box (U-Haul) is a different animal: its pricing is more fixed and phone reps have less room to maneuver, so the published price is closer to the final price. The cancel-to-save tactic is a PODS-and-peers game, not a U-Haul one.
FAQ
Does PODS price match competitors?
Not as an official policy. But a competitor's written quote is your best leverage on the phone — reps routinely sharpen the price when they see one.
Is my first PODS quote binding?
No. An online quote is an estimate. Once you book, the price locks in unless you change the order — which is exactly why you negotiate before the booking is final, or use the cancellation window.
When is the worst time to try?
Peak season (June–July). Containers are scarce, demand is high, and reps know it. Shoulder-season calls get better results.
